In a not-too-distant future of a food obsessed city of Los Angeles, where Master Chefs rule the town like crime lords and people literally kill for a seat at the best restaurant, Jiro, a renegade and ruthless sushi chef arrives in town with strong ideas of his own. It’s a bloody culinary war of epic proportions, and in the end, no chef may be left alive.
It was a complete surprise to me when I learned that Anthony Bourdain on top of being a renowned chef, a best-selling author and host of the Travel Channel’s TV shows “No Reservations” and “The Layover” was also a comic book collector. For quite a while he wanted to write his own comic and his dream has finally come true with the help of novelist Joel Rose and the detailed art of Langdon Foss.
I love this book. It’s like a well prepared gourmet dish that has all its ingredients dished out in the right proportions. The story had me on the edge of my seat from the beginning to the end. We are treated to a word of violence, oppression, excess and corruption that is on the verge of exploding. Bourdain and Rose not only managed to tell a cautionary tale about the dangers of power but also wrote a beautiful love letter to every person that likes good cuisine all over the world. This is the first time that I treat myself to the exquisite art of Langdon Foss and I’m floored. Each page is full of detail and beauty. The pages that detail the different kinds of food are simply mouthwatering. My compliments to the team of José Villarubia and Dave Stewart for doing a superb coloring job. Todd Klein did and excellent lettering job.
I highly recommend this book.
